Purpose: To educate providers on the role of buprenorphine in chronic pain management and provide strategies for utilizing buprenorphine in the treatment of chronic pain.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the pharmacology of buprenorphine and its potential utility in the management of chronic pain.
  • Discuss the characteristics of buprenorphine formulations used to treat chronic pain.
  • Formulate appropriate strategies to initiate buprenorphine for the treatment of chronic pain.
  • Identify potential barriers to the use of buprenorphine for chronic pain, as well as strategies for shared decision-making when considering buprenorphine initiation.
